Kevin Maguire
Honorary Life Member
Having never been involved in athletics before he went to Glasgow University in 1970 Kevin joined the University club and quickly showed a talent for High Jump, the event in which he won outdoor National titles in 1973 and 1977 and gained Scottish international vests.
A move to Edinburgh and EAC saw him competing in Decathlon and winning the National title in 1976. He competed for EAC in the British Men’s League and at the time of his marriage to Moira Walls he was the EAC team captain, and she was the ESH team captain.
Kevin is a Level 3 Jump coach and got involved in coaching High Jump at ESH when he mentored wife Moira in her athletics career and he established a group of ESH athletes, keen to do High Jump. When his younger daughter Kirsty and her friend Gillian Cooke showed an interest in Pole Vault, which had just been accepted as an event for women he started to coach the event with great success.
Gillian was selected to represent Scotland in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and daughter Kirsty was Scotland’s U23 athlete of the year in 2005 and represented Scotland in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Kevin has introduced numerous athletes to Pole Vault, many going on to compete internationally for Scotland and he continues to work alongside daughter Kirsty at Meadowbank, where they are developing a centre of excellence, which caters for beginners, vault specialists and decathletes. Kevin’s enthusiasm has not waned and he remains passionate about the event and the athletes he coaches.
