Alex Macewen

Honorary Life Member

Alex joined EAC in 1982 on his return to Edinburgh, having taken up running as an undergraduate to improve fitness. He is a UKA level 3 coach and for decades he has planned and led training sessions multiple times per week, with a philosophy that centres on achieving individual goals and provides bespoke training plans, advice and motivation. He imparts not only technical knowledge but also wisdom that enhances both an athlete’s sporting career and their broader life, retaining athletes and keeping them involved in the sport in the long-term and over the years he has coached many athletes to District and National level as well as medallists on track, fell, and cross country.

He also manages teams, puts together squads, and coaches/motivates these squads to win national medals on a regular basis and he has played a leading role in building up Edinburgh AC into a hugely successful and well-respected club, with World and Olympic medallists among its ranks. He is also a long-term club committee member, executive, trustee, event organiser and marshal, providing training/guidance to volunteers, stewards and marshals to ensure that races run smoothly and has officiated at a host of local and EAC events including FRA relays, World Mountain Running Champs and World cross country Champs.

Alex is widely regarded as a role model, top coach and respected leader within Edinburgh AC and the wider Scottish Athletics community. He has been honoured on the “Wall of Fame” at the redeveloped Meadowbank Stadium, to commemorate his outstanding contributions as an athletics coach. His legacy is defined not just by the athletes he has helped to succeed, but by the culture of support, humility, and excellence he has fostered within Edinburgh and the Scottish Athletics community.
