John Scott

As a Long Jumper John Scott competed for EAC from 1978 to 1992, a Scottish medallist on multiple occasions including gold in 1982 and 1984 and a UK silver medallist in the AAAs in 1983. He was a regular in the Scottish team and his best of 7.51 still ranks him highly on the all-time list.
John started coaching in 1992 and is a Level 4 Performance coach. Over the last 3 decades John has twice been the Scottish National Lead Coach for Jumps, and Team Coach for both Scotland and GB. He has been a team coach to Edinburgh athletes in the McDonalds, YDL upper and lower, the Women’s UK and most recently the Premier Division of the National Athletics leagues and has travelled the length and breadth of the country to support athletes.
He has coached 5 athletes who achieved Commonwealth Games selection for Scotland, Duncan Mathieson 1994, Darren Ritchie 2002, Gillian Cooke 2006, Sarah Warnock 2014 in addition to coaching young athletes to Youth Commonwealth Games representation. Gillian Cooke (LJ)2000, Nike Osifodunrin (LJ) 2004, Calum Henderson (LJ) 2017. He also coached Jayne Nisbet to selection for the European 2007 U20 championships in the Triple Jump and Bera Ajala in 2021. Under his guidance Gillian Cooke became World Champion in the 2- woman Bobsleigh as brakewoman in 2009 and in 2010 she was selected for the Olympic Games in Lake Placid.
John is still coaching 5 times a week, and his current squad includes multiple medal winners at Scottish National Championships. Alongside wife Anne, he was a worthy recipient of the Eric Liddell Recognition Award and athletes he has worked with will agree wholeheartedly that he embodies the spirit of dedication and selflessness in athletics and that his holistic approach understands that success is not just about physical prowess but also mental strength, discipline, and character development.
