Eric’s involvement with EAC began 60 years ago when he joined EAC and he was very quickly given the task of taking the Colts and Junior Boys on road runs around Saughton and Balgreen from the club rooms at Fords Road, while himself training for the half mile, mile cross country and road races. When Meadowbank opened in 1970, he took over the managing and coaching of the 114 young athletes, who turned up at the club following the Commonwealth Games and he encouraged parents to come on board and assist.
A Level 3 Middle- and Long-Distance coach he continues to coach young athletes up to 3 times a week and enjoys introducing them to the Steeplechase. Athletes, who came under his wing in their development years and went on to represent Scotland and GB internationally with well documented success are Paul Forbes, Yvonne Murray, Jake Kerr and world Champions Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman. Lauren Stoddart, winner of 4 Scottish Steeplechase titles and a team stalwart of EAC, City of Edinburgh, ESH and Glasgow Jaguars has been coached by Eric throughout her 18-year career since the age of 12.
Eric was invited to join the EAC committee in 1969 and served until 1975 and he organised the Edinburgh – Berwick Law Road Race and was race convener till 1980. He was a Marathon and Walk Technical Official in the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and secretary and Treasurer for the Forth Valley League.
He was the EAC Male Team Manager for U14-U17 age group in Cross Country from 1988 until he handed over the baton in 2021. He was a very successful marathon runner and his best time of 2:27:03 set in 1977, would have ranked him in this year’s top 20 in Scotland. He was a bronze medallist in the 1978 Scottish Championships. His passion for and commitment to the club has not waned and he is still enthusing the young athletes he is working with.
