Dougie’s athletic journey started when he competed for Lasswade in the throwing events, but he started coaching over 25 years ago when his daughter Hannah joined Edinburgh Woollen Mill in 2000 as under U13 and showed an interest in throws. He is a Level 2 coach, specialising in throws and he has helped coach a number of age group internationalists, including Kimberely Reed, who was top ranked U20 hammer thrower in the UK and was selected to represent GB in the World Junior Championships and Kiera Waddell, a 50 plus metre javelin thrower at U17 until serious injury forced her out of the sport.
He has also managed the conditioning programmes for age group champions as they progressed in the sport. He works with Graham Condie, a very successful F32 athlete, who has won multiple Scottish titles in the club and discus events. He continues to work with an expanding throws squad at Meadowbank and despite the challenges of the ongoing issues with the outside throwing area he continues to have athletes on the podium in age group and senior Scottish Championships.
