Derek Cogle

Honorary Life Member

Derek started coaching in 1985 when both his daughters were training with Edinburgh Southern Harriers Ladies and he was persuaded to qualify as a coach. 2025 marks his 40th year as a coach with ESH/EAC. He started working with the U11 and U13 age group alongside other coaches in ESH and offered Long Jump coaching for the U15 and U17 age groups. He is a Horizontal Jumps Coach Level 3 and is also a Field Judge Level 3.

He continues to coach with the U11/U13 girls and in their early years many girls, who went on to compete for Scotland started in Derek’s group, including 4x400 gold medallist in the 2025 U20 European Championships, Rebecca Grieve, Commonwealth Games representatives Kirsty Maguire, Jayne Nisbet, Emma Nuttall and Sarah Malone. Silver Medallist in the 800M in Glasgow and Olympian Lynsey Sharp was another ESH athlete, whose athletic journey started with Derek. He was the ESH Team Manager for the Forth Valley league and he continues to assist with the YDL lower age group. He manages and posts articles on the Club Facebook page and assists with the club website, posting pictures to the Clubs Gallery in Flickr. He was also responsible for compiling the Club records and updates them.

Derek’s contribution to the club has been immense and he continues to ensure the next generation of young female athletes coming through the door at Meadowbank have an enjoyable and positive experience to start them on their athletic journey and that their successes will be well documented on the club website.
