Introduction

Edinburgh Athletic Club has a long established reputation of “winning” and following the 2016 Season the club were named as the Edinburgh Sports Club of the Year and the Scottish Athletics Track and Field Club of the Year. However the legacy of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 has resulted in growing numbers of young people in the Capital, wishing to become involved in athletics and Edinburgh Athletic Club like many other clubs being at full capacity and forced to operate a waiting list.

To solve this problem  our vision was to increase the number of coaches coaching within the club system, establish Hubs around the city to offer coaching to young people before they are inducted into the formal club coaching system and for the first time create a pathway connecting school’s athletics to the club environment.“Edinburgh AC Winning Cadets” promises to deliver and the club are indebted to all the partners, who have worked together to provide this exciting opportunity for Edinburgh Athletic Club and the young people of the city. Funding from The Spartan Hardship Fund, City of Edinburgh Council, scottishathletics and sportscotland have enabled  the club to appoint a Schools to club coaching officer to develop, organise and coach at satellite hubs, in secondary school cluster areas, fully linked to Edinburgh AC mainly across the North East Neighbourhood of Edinburgh.

It is a fitting tribute to Brian Winning, a much respected EAC coach, who established the first Hub at the Royal High School that the coaching Officer is Matt Jones, who was himself coached by Brian and inspired by him to become involved in coaching.

We hope that in partnership with active schools “Edinburgh AC Winning Cadets” will prove to be a “winning” formula as Edinburgh AC aim to continue on their “winning” ways in 2017 and beyond!
